Super Sunday Sumatran Delight

Whole Foods has a contest on Facebook for Super Sunday recipes.  I wrote this one up to offer Super Bowl fans a light dessert that will sit well on top of all the other goodness they eat on Sunday.

I don't normally drink anything in my coffee except half and half.  But once in a while when I'm enjoying a cup in the afternoon or for dessert, I like to add a couple of goodies to an Asian coffee to produce a rich, creamy, simple cup of joe that tastes darned good.

Try this warm treat for dessert.  It's been specially formulated to be rich and smooth drinking.  If you just want to enjoy the richness of this recipe without the late day buzz, then you could use a decaf blend too.

Serves about three.

This one's for Mark, who loves sports and putting lots of stuff in his coffee.

Ingredients:

  • 2.2 oz. fair trade organic Sumatra, medium roast, whole bean coffee.  This coffee has been selected for its body, low acidity, and richness.  You could of course replace it with another Asian coffee (such as Papua New Guinea, Sulawesi, or East Timor) or even a medium roast Colombian.
  • 16 oz. cold, filtered water or the finest tap you can find
  • 3 oz. half and half, organic
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon, ground
  • 2 tbsp. sugar, fair trade organic

Equipment:

  • Coffee Grinder
  • Coffee Maker (French Press or Mr. Coffee Style Drip)
  • Thermos big enough to hold both the coffee and half and half (20 oz. will do well).

Tip: If you're not sure of the volume of your thermos, check it by measuring hot water into it before hand.  One cup is eight ounces.  This will both ensure you're thermos is big enough AND preheat the thermos.

Preparation:

  • Grind your coffee coarse enough for french press, or a little more fine if you are using a drip brewer.
  • Brew your coffee.  If you're using a french press allow for a four to five minute brew time before pushing the plunger.

TIP: If you're using a drip machine, be sure your water is hot enough.  You can do this by adding boiling water to the reservoir (instead of cold) or by running the water through once WITHOUT your coffee or filter, then pouring it into the reservoir for brewing.

  • Add cinnamon and sugar to thermos.
  • Pour your coffee into thermos.
  • Add half and half.
  • Close thermos and agitate slowly for 10 seconds.
  • Let the coffee settle.
  • Open the lid carefully, as some pressure will build up inside your thermos.
  • Pour drink into mugs and enjoy.
