I just got back from the Small Axe NYC Coffee tour.
I Heart NY. I spent the better part of the late 90’s living in New York City – pretending to take college classes and chasing girls. These were the days before 9/11 when people were a little nicer, things were a little cheaper, and before I could appreciate coffee. Be that as it may (fortunately or unfortunately) it was before good coffee came to New York…mostly, except for Oren’s Daily Roast, of course.
Thnks, Coffee Gods. Since I left New York, it seems the coffee gods have been good to NYC. Through hard work and calculated risks, a flurry of coffee houses and roasters that embody the Small Axe Coffee values have moved into New York City.
This Year's Tour. So, when I had to be in New York City for a couple of days this week, I was determined to visit as many of these coffee stars as my early mornings and late evenings would allow. I planned as well as I could – selected my destinations in clusters where I could easily hop from the bus to the subway and back to the rickshaw. It was an amazing trip that led me through my old stomping grounds to the doors of some of the best coffee houses and most friendly coffee people I’ve met to date.
Coffee Houses of the Holy. So here it is, one by one, the coffee houses of the Holy that the coffee gods put on my path this week. Check them each out, one by one. Big thanks of course to Mike White and team at GimmeCoffee, Mark at Ninth Street Espresso, Sam at Everyman Espresso, and the masterful though unnamed folks at Café Grumpy.
